Tattoo work issues, a thing of the past?
Article By: Alejandra Boggiano

Have you ever thought about getting a tattoo? Or do you have one but worry you will have to get rid of it to score the job of your dreams? Well think again.

Is the year 2007 and tattoos are no longer a rebellious proclamation, but part of an increasingly popular fashion statement.
From everyday people to actors and pop figures like Angelina Jolie, Nicole Richie and Colin Farrell, tattoos could soon become part of an acceptable trait. According to “Bodies of Inscription,” a book written in the year 2000 by Margo DeMello, tattooing was adopted in North America from the Polynesian culture in the mid-eighteen century.

“Tattooing in Polynesia can be traced, through archaeological evidence, to at least the second millennium B.C.,” said DeMello. “Tattoos were primarily linear and probably served a genealogical function as well as a protective one.” Shortly thereafter, tattoos gained popularity amongst various sub-cultures including bikers, prison inmates, sailors and band members.

With shows like TLC’s ‘Miami Ink’ and A&E’s ‘Inked’ it is now possible for us to witness the stories and dramatic on-goings of tattoo artists and their customers, who visit the tattoo parlors in order to acquire body art of sentimental meaning. Whether for sentimental or purely aesthetic purposes, tattoos have become in the last decade a part of a new customary trend that is growing at an exponential rate.

But is everybody aware of this increasingly popular trend? Are tattoos slowly becoming more acceptable in the workplace?

Travis Mason, 28, is an assistant manager at Nordstrom in La Jolla, Calif. He has nine tattoos, the most noticeable being the one of his mother’s name on his wrist. Mason says it is not part of the store policy to have employees cover their tattoos. “I see a lot of people with them,” said Mason. “It is mainly the department’s judgment whether they allow them or not, but usually they are not banned as long as they are not insulting or offensive.” (Full Article to be released in the 2008 Preview Issue)

LUCID Magazine got a one on one with R&B sensation Ne-Yo. Ne-Yo gave us some Q&A on what started him out in the music business and who some he was mostly influenced by as a child.  The former ghost writer /composer turned multi-platinum vocalist shared some of his preparation techniques that only told LUCID, so this is an exclusive.

Through my research of your influences, I was a bit thrown off. You’re quoted that Sammy Davis Jr. and Prince played a huge part in your growth as an artist. But when you perform, people often compare you to Michael Jackson. Can you make sense of this?

Ne-Yo: Yes, I can. I looked up to Prince as a Musical God, because there’s nothing the man can’t do musically. I looked up to Sammy Davis Jr. because of his overall swag. Sammy Davis Jr., glass eyeball and all was a cool, cool cat; he was electric on stage.

As for the Michael comparisons, it came from me literally studying Mike and I’m not talking about his dance moves. I can dance, but it has never been my forte. When I was learning how to see, I hated the tone of my voice because it was nasally and thin. My mom used to listen to cats like Billy Ocean, Donnie Hathaway and Sam Cooke; singers with these rich, smoky voices. That was what I wanted to sound like, but I didn’t have that (richness). So my mom gave me Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall album and Stevie Wonders “Hotter Than July” album. She told me to study both albums back and forth and I would become a better singer because of it. So that’s what I did. I knew “Off The Wall” frontward and backwards. And she was right; I became more comfortable with my own voice. (Full Article to be released in the 2008 Preview Issue)

Ten Things You Should Know
About Red Meats Link to Colon Cancer

In a recent study by the American Cancer Society researchers have found a direct link to Colon Cancer and red meat. Say it aint so! For years there has been evidence linking long term eating of red or processed meat and Colon Cancer, only recently were we able to find a direct correlation between the two. The findings, published in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association (Vol. 293, No. 2: 172-182), are based on a long-term study of nearly 149,000 adults between the ages of 50 and 74. The study also suggests that a proper diet and exercise can decrease many of the risk factors associated with Colon Cancer.

Steak

Red meat can be defined as anything beef, pork, or lamb based including processed foods such as canned ham, deli meats, hot dogs, sausages, etc...

  1. Eating large amounts of red or processed meat for a long period of time can result in Colon Cancer.
  2. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death for American citizens.
  3. Practicing healthy eating habits will help decrease your risks of developing cancer.
  4. Frequent exercise is also required to reduce your cancer risk an also maintain a healthly lifestyle.
  5. Men over the age of 35 and women over the age of 30 are considered high risk candidates for developing many types of cancer.
  6. To start living a healthier life try eating more vegetables and foods that are high in fiber.
  7. Try to reduce your salt and sugar intakes.
  8. Stay away from fried and greasy foods, potato chips, fried chicken, french fries.
  9. Make sure you are eating a well balanced meal so that your body is getting sufficient protein and vitamins.
  10. If you are not exercising regularly, start off slow and find the best work out regimen the works for you.

NIGHTLIFE: A GUIDE TO THE GUESTLIST!
By: Christopher A.Glenon (Myspace.com/CAGlenon)

As I sit here pondering what to write about, I realize I should introduce myself. I’m Christopher A. Glenon. Daddy / Son / Friend / Promoter / Networker Extraordinaire and so many other hats that we all wear in our daily lives. I live in San Diego and believe in living life to the fullest and enjoying as much of what is around us as we can. Brief, but enough to start the picture and add the paint later.

My intent is to help you better understand the club scene and what you see going on while you’re in it. At some point I hope to help you become less naïve while you are out there getting drunk and making a fool of yourself.
The club scene. The night life. The time when Vampires feed. Not literal vampires, but I will get into that in my next article. So often, we take what is around us for granted. So is it as crazy as everyone makes it? Yes. Even more than what the regular club-goer experiences and sees, but in an extremely
entertaining way.

I’ve been in the club scene for more than 3 years now. Not only as a club-goer, but also as a promoter and a networker. My friends range from club-goers to security to promoters to club management to club owners. From one side to the other. I understand what it takes to throw an event at a club and promote it. I understand that there are profits that need to be made (hence the reason everybody can’t get in for free).

Let’s start with the basics.... (Full Article to be released in the 2008 Preview Issue)
